Victim of the Drought (color)
Subject: African Elephant Dimensions (inches): 17 x 12 Medium: Photograph Description: This photograph is of a 60 year elephant known as Remedios with her year old calf. It was near the end of a two year drought and all elephants in Amboseli were weak and thin. Remedios was especially thin and it was obvious she had little milk for the young calf. It was also clear that the calf wouldn't survive long. Remedios and two of her older calves spent hours trying to get the youngest calf to water. Even though they were in desperate need of water themselves, they would not leave him. The calf was so weak, he could barely stand. Remedios would help him to his feet and encourage him to take a few steps. He would then stop, sometimes lay down again. This process would be repeated many times before they finally reached the edge of the swamp. Sadly, and mercifully, the calf did not survive the night.
