Oxpecker Head
(2009)
Subject: Cape Buffalo with Oxpeckers
Dimensions (inches): 20 x 24
Medium: oil on canvas - gallery wrap (painting goes over the sides - no frame)
Description: This is a therapy piece for me. Since a Cape buffalo took out one of my heros, Simon Combes, I've felt like I had a vendetta against them. At the very least I thought I would never paint one. Then I thought, 'Well that makes about as much sense as despising all people for the sins of the relative few'. So this is a sort of pay-back. The name is a bit of a joke, which I thought Simon would appreciate with his unique sense of humour. I wanted to convey the sheer size of these guys, but that they actually look quite comical at times. This one we saw in the Masai Mara with my artist companions. The oxpeckers looked like they were having a wild party on this fellow's head. It was actually hilarious! The painting was also fun to do, so many colours in the beast! Also, any proceeds will go to the Soysambu Conservancy, the place where Simon lived and died at the horns of the buffalo. Soysambu is now a conservation area thanks to Kat Combes and Guy Combes, Simon's wife and son and the people working with them. It is in such a critical area of the Rift Valley in Kenya, where wildlife compete with settlement and will help create a safer wildlife corridor, close to Lake Nakuru Park.
