Mud Joy
(2010)
Subject: elephants having a mud bath in Amboseli
Dimensions (inches): 24 x 48
Medium: oil on canvas
Description: One of the moments of greatest joy in my life was seeing these elephants having a mud bath in Amboseli, Kenya. It was after a drought & elephants all over the park were enjoying water and mud with obvious delight. These ones were covered in mud, globules, caked lumps and wet layers of it. While in Samburu, Kenya, I had seen many mud holes where elephants had obviously had some spa time, and we saw lots of elephants, but never dreamed to see an elephant mud spa in action. I was so overcome that I was unknowingly making high pitched noises, which soon cut bath time short. Elephants never fail to penetrate my very soul. They are wise, loving, demonstrate teamwork and lifetime commitment more clearly than most people I have ever known.
