There Goes the Neighbourhood
(2014)
Dimensions (inches): 12 x 24
Medium: oil on wood panel
Description: This is intended to be "painterly" to reflect the magical moment and colours I witnessed when this herd of deer walked right down Westpointe Drive in front of me and crossed the road to a mystery destination. People seem thrilled to see deer and yet, in their natural home, they are plagued by hunters and poachers with quads and rifles. Hence there have been lots of deer visiting neighbourhoods in the city of Kelowna. Typically residents complain deer are destroying their gardens. The answer, say hunters, is that predators are out of control, driving deer into the city; so the Province has issued open season on the 20 wolves that are known to be out there. When walking in the wilderness with my wolf- dog, I am compelled to put safety vests on both of us to prevent being shot. I can only imagine the terror experienced by families of deer. These are mule deer, so named for their charming, enormous ears.. "better to hear you with, my dear".
