Polar Dip
(2010)
Subject: Arctic Dimensions (inches): 12 x 16 Medium: Oil on panel Description: To do the polar dip in the polar regions is usually an exciting and challenging adventure which gives you a sense of accomplishment. Over the years, the temperature in the Arctic has been warming drastically and this past summer, with no sea ice, it was hard to believe you were in the Arctic. This year's polar dip included a BBQ ashore and many people stayed in for a longer swim. There are always still things to think about and be aware of your surroundings when traveling in the Arctic regions. The tide went out very quickly and we almost got stranded in our cove for the night. We ended up being lucky the water was warmer, as the last 2 zodiacs of staff had to wade through a few rivers to get to a spot that the zodiac could pick us up and return us to our ship. Hypothermia is still a very real danger when traveling in polar regions.
