Markhor
(2010)
Subject: Astore markhor Dimensions (inches): 24 x 18 Medium: Oil on canvas Description: Markhor is national animal of Pakistan. It is an endangered animal but in special reserves sufficient numbers are found to allow trophy hunting like Kaigah wildlife reserve and Chitral gol national park. One or two trophies are allowed in a season per reserve. Three subspecies are found in Pakistan and are Kashmir markhor, Astore markhor and Suleman markhor. The variation in the shape of serpentine horns and the distribution are the differentiating factors. Markhor means a snake eater but in fact this animal does not eat snakes! Probably the snake like pattern of horns is related to its name.
