Monarchs Matter - Monarch Butterflies on Zinnia by Ellen Woodbury
  Monarchs Matter  (2015)
Subject: Monarch Butterflies on Zinnia
Dimensions (inches): 7 x 11 x 8
Medium: Translucent Orange Alabaster and 4 kinds of Marble on Marble
Description: I've seen the overwintering monarch butterflies in Pacific Grove, CA. These butterflies live west of the Rocky Mountains and fly nearly 2,000 miles to roost in the pines and eucalyptus trees on the Pacific coast. This migration happens over several generations and none of the individual butterflies have ever traveled the migration route before. Amazing! The monarchs here in the mid-west and Canada migrate 3,000 miles to over-winter in the Oyamel fir forests in central Mexico.

Monarch butterfly populations have crashed by 90% in the last 20 years. In the mid 90's, one billion monarchs made the migration to Mexico. Last year only 33.5 million made the journey.
