Huachuca Redstarts
(2011)
Subject: Painted Redstarts (Myioborus pictus), Emory Oak (Quercus emoryi), and Dim Firetip (Pyrrhopyge Araxes)
Dimensions (inches): 12 x 18
Medium: transparent watercolor
Description: I live among the canyons of the Huachuca Mountains, part of the Madrean Sky Islands in southeast Arizona. This watercolor is part of my ongoing series of animals and plants around my home. In the lower reaches of Miller canyon, these Painted Redstarts were seen taking grassy material into their hidden nest at the base of a tree. Also found here are Emory Oak and the Dim Firetip Skipper whose host plant is the oak. The evergreen Emory Oak is adapted to heat stress and a low water environment. They provide year-round shelter and food for a many types of insects, birds and mammals. The band of oaks in these mountains bridge the upper altitude oak-pine forest to the lower oak savanna, and are considerable habitat for more than one species. The uniqueness and diversity of the area is well recognized by birders, entomologists, herpetologists and botanists who visit the area. Uncertainties of future climate change and availability of water throughout the southwest are growing. Water conservation and wildfire awareness are paramount in the face of spreading human development.
