Soft feathers mute the sound of the owl's flight as it pursues moths, beetles and scorpions. By day the desert may seem devoid of life, but after dark the evening concert begins with chuckling owls, buzzing insects and barking mammals. Crevices and cracks in old saguaros provide quiet places for desert dwellers to hide from their predators and the day's heat as they wait to emerge in the cool of evening.
