La Vie en Vert - Gray tree frog ( Hyla versicolor) and ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris) by Colette Theriault
  La Vie en Vert  (2013)
Subject: Gray tree frog ( Hyla versicolor) and ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris)
Dimensions (inches): 7 x 5
Medium: pastel on archival paper
Description: *SELECTED FOR AFC 2014 ANNUAL EXHIBITION OF NATURE IN ART*
Gray tree frogs have the ability to change color from gray to green and also have a varying degree of mottling (ranges from nearly black to nearly white) on their skin. This cryptic coloration renders them virtually undetectable which is essential for their survival against predators. The inner thighs on the hind legs are yellow and this is especially noticeable when the frog jumps.

Sporting a mottled green coloration, this frog clings securely to the lush fronds of an ostrich fern with the help of his sticky toe pads.
