Thought and Memory, Ravens of Wyoming
(2014)
Subject: Two Ravens on Pine Tree Near the Grand Teton Range
Dimensions (inches): 36 x 48
Medium: Acrylic on Gallery Canvas
Description: I think it's interesting that in our minds, there is only past (memory) and present (thought). Why no future? Because to speculate about future events is to use memory (past experiences) to think. That's why it's easier to cut down a tree than to plant one. Or to idly allow a species to dwindle toward extinction than to bring it back. In Norse mythology, the blind god Odin had two ravens: Hugin (thought) and Munin (memory). They perched upon his shoulders as he sat on his throne and he sent them out into the wide world every morning, anxiously waiting for their return at night. There, they would whisper into his ears news of all they had seen and heard. In that way, he learned about everything that was happening on earth.
"Hugin and Munin fly each day over the spacious earth. I fear for Hugin that he come not back, Yet more anxious am I for Munin." --From the Elder Edda, A boot of Ancient Icelandic Legends.
