Fast Sketching in India & the Himalayas
Subject: Everything!
Dimensions (inches): 0 x 0
Medium: 9B Woodless Graphite pencils & blender
Description: Sketching is the most creative artistic process I use in my work. And I even though my main focus may be birds, wildlife, and landscapes... I sketch everything! I get in touch with my surroundings by sketching. I take tons of digital photos & video, but it's my sketches, done on site, in the moment, in direct perceptual contact with my subject, that allow me to paint. In fact, I sketch the way I paint. If you think of my halftone values that you see in my sketches, as watercolor washes, you can see how close my sketching process is to my painting method and results. If you only paint from photos you lose that immediate contact with Nature. My cameras are simply not as sensitive to Nature's subtlties and nuances as my eyes. And for me... the ability to sketch quickly allows me to try out various ideas on the spot, rather than later back in my studio. Then... I back up my sketches with photos of what I sketch!
