Watchful (Saiga Antelope)
(2016)
Subject: Saiga Antelope (Saiga tartarica mongolica)
Dimensions (inches): 24 x 36
Medium: oil
Description: Saiga antelope (Saiga tartarica mongolica) date back to the Pleistocene. There are two populations, one is Kazakstan and one in Mongolia. The latter is the subject of my painting. In the 1990s, after Mongolia transitioned from communiism to democracy, that period of instability resulted in great reductions of many species, including the saiga, due to uncontrolled hunting. The population plummeted from tens of thousands down to around 800. At that point conservation efforts began and the species recovered to around 5000. However, in January of 2017 a disease transmitted by livestock caused a loss of a little over 50%. Animals often "ramp up" reproduction in response to a sudden population drop and it appears that may be happening with the saiga. I saw this calf in Khar Us Nuur National Park in far western Mongolia two years ago. Saiga are very skttish and very fast so it was highly unusual for us to get close enough to this one to get good reference photos. Saiga are considered "Critically Endangered" by the IUCN.
