Night Shift
(2001)
Subject: Barred Owl, Saw-whet Owl, Long-eared Owl, Boreal Owl Dimensions (inches): 24 x 15 Medium: Oil Description: This painting began as a depiction of the saw-whet owl amidst summer foliage, and which with a sense of dissatisfaction was set aside for several months. The ensuing time did nothing to change my mind and all but the owl was scraped and wiped away. A month or two later I happened to be in Algonquin Park attempting to catch sight of a barred owl who called repeatedly from a stand of dense bush. This experience led to the idea of presenting four owl species, two common, and two more rarely found in Algonquin, in scale to each other. In effect it is a description of 'owlness', a quality immediately recognized regardless of the individual species.
