BROWSING RADIATED TORTOISE
(2010)
Subject: Radiated Tortoise
Dimensions (inches): 18 x 24
Medium: acrylic on illustration board
Description: Once common in the spiny deserts of Madagascar's southwest, the critically endangered Radiated Tortoise (Astrochelys radiata) has undergone a dramatic population decrease over the past two decades. Nearly 80% of the species' habitat has been severely degraded and in recent years it has been subjected to substantial illegal harvesting for human consumption. Most population models predict extinction around 2050. The two ethnic groups that historically share A. radiata's range, the Mahafaly and the Antandroy, traditionally shun the turtles, but outsiders in increasing numbers have been collecting them in unprotected areas as well as in reserves. In this painting a Radiated Tortoise browses on Chadsia grandifolia flowers in typical spiny desert habitat. Incidental species include a Fony Baobab (Adansonia rubrostipa), Octopus Trees (Didierea madagascariensis), the didiereacid Alluaudia procera, Geay's Thickfoot (Pachypodium geayi), an unidentified aloe (Aloe sp.), robber fly (Microstylum sp.), Smooth-bellied Day Gecko (Phelsuma modesta), Four-spotted Iguana (Oplurus quadimaculatus) and a Running Coua (Coua cursor).
