Martin Scuffins has been fascinated by wildlife and, in particular, birds of prey since early childhood. This fascination with raptors was frequently explored artistically, although to his art teachers at school his obstinate refusal to draw anything else was a continual source of frustration. At ten, he became fascinated by the ancient sport of falconry and trained his first bird – a muscovy duck! By eighteen years of age, he had progressed to more serious pursuits and was operating a wildlife shelter, soon becoming recognised for his work with injured birds of prey.In 1991 he graduated with a Biological Resource Management degree from the University of Ballarat and completed his honours year (Biology) in 1994. His passion for wildlife has increasingly found expression through his artwork. In 2003 and 2004, Martin studied art under award winning wildlife artist Steve Morvell. Martin now lives with his wife, Talia, on their Trust for Nature covenanted property at Garibaldi, near Buninyong. He continues to care for birds of prey under a government permit whilst focusing much of his remaining time and energy on his artwork - expressing the beauty of the birds that surround and inspire him in mediums of pastel and charcoal.Martin Scuffins owns and operates the Central Highlands Bird of Prey Shelter - dedicated to the rehabilitation and conservation of Australia's unique birds of Prey. As well as rescuing and rehabilitating raptors injured in the course of human activity, Martin devotes much of his time to education. Through his 'meet the beaks' program, school children come to appreciate the importance of conserving birds of prey and protecting their habitat. Martin is also an avid supported of conservation programs which protect wildlife habitat. 20% of the proceeds of his latest exhibition 'Feather and Talon' were donated to Australia's oldest land trust - Trust for Nature; an active on-the-ground conservation organisation committed to innovation solutions that conserve Australia's precious environmental heritage.
