Zenaida was a founder of the BayWood Artists, the first group of Northern California professional artists solely dedicated to helping preserve open space and restoring habitat for future generations. The BayWood Artists are a small group of professional plein air artists dedicated to helping preserve the environment for future generations and the lands we love- the remaining open space of Marin County and the greater Bay Area. Through exhibits and the sale of paintings, the artists hope to focus public attention on, and raise awareness and funds for, environmentally sensitive projects as well as those lands that inspire their art and the organizations committed to their preservation. They donate 50% of the proceeds from the exhibits to those organizations. Past BayWood Artist exhibits have helped benefit the Marin Open Space District, Hawthorn Canyon; the Marin Agricultural Land Trust, (M.A.L.T.); the restoration of Bolinas Lagoon, now listed as an International Heritage Site. The Greenbelt Alliance; Fish Friendly Farming, (an organization which assists vineyard growers, ranchers and farmers to use the land in the most environmentally sensitive way); the restoration of Oakwood Valley near Mill Valley for the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy; the Marin Open Space District for helping protect ridge land above Mill Valley; wetland restoration for the Marin Bayland Advocates; the Bay Area Ridge Trail in its efforts to complete the 400 mile greenbelt around the Bay Area; and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy's Redwood Creek Restoration Project. Zenaida has lived, painted, and exhibited in New England, Africa, Japan, and California. She has a B.A. from the University of California, classical art training with Maria Sanchez and Elizabeth Holland, and has studied and had numerous workshops with, among others, John Seerey Lester, Ned Mueller, John Banovich, George Strickland, William Scott Jennings, T.M. Nicholas, Simon Combes, John Budicin and Scott Christensen. The preservation of remaining open space and wilderness has been a major concern as well as the primary influence on and inspiration for Zenaida's painting. A studio and plein air oil painter, she specializes in landscape and wildlife, and gets her inspiration not only from her native California and the west, but also from her travels to Europe, Mexico, Africa and this fall to Bhutan and Vietnam."Zee Zee" grew up hiking and backpacking with her family, whom she credits with teaching her not only a deep respect for the land and its wildlife, but also a strong sense of responsibility for helping preserve them.To help "give back" at least a little of what she feels the land has given her, she became a founder of the BayWood Artists, a group of professional landscape artists dedicated to preserving open space and habitat restoration through benefit exhibitions. She is an Artist Member of the California Art Club, the Oil Painters of America, the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association (LPAPA), the American Academy of Women Artists, a Signature Artist Member of the American Impressionist Society, the National Academy of Plein Air Artists and a Signature Member of Artists for Conservation. She has participated in over 100 group shows, and five recent solo shows have featured her work, among them Ansel Adams Gallery in the Sierra, and California Collector's Gallery in Kentfield. Her paintings have been featured on KRON's Bay Area Backroads three times and are in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress.
