Jan Martin McGuire has always donated both originals and prints to such conservation organizations as Ducks Unlimited, Quail Unlimited, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, National Turkey Federation, National Audubon Society and others.
She has done volunteer work including helping to raise Southern Bald Eagles at the Sutton Aian Research Center who has single handily introduced breeding pairs of eagles back to Southern States including Oklahoma. Before then there had not been breeding pairs for over 10 years.  Oklahoma alone now has over 60 breeding pairs, initially created through this program.
Jan also was the chairman for and co-chairs for local Ducks Unlimited and Quail Unlimited chapters.  She and one of her clients actually started the Quail Unlimited Chapter in Bartlesville, Ok.
Recently she and her husband James, working with the their local Rotary Club, sponsored and mentored a girl from Kenya going to college in Oklahoma.  Through an annual fundraiser, car raffle, and safari raffle they raised enough money to put her through Rogers State University where she just graduated with a Bachelors degree in Business Management.  She will be doing an internship at Safari Club International's conservation office in Washington DC.  Her father, which is Jan and James safari guide in Kenya, has opened a nature center in his home village of Kangundo.  Emma will be writing business plans for the center which is already teaching area youth the importance of conservation of wildlife and wild areas.
Jan is very active this year and has been recognized by other organizations for her contribution to the natural world. She is the Safari Club International Foundation Conservation Artist of the Year 2008. Safari Club International (SCI) is a group that promotes hunting and wildlife conservation in more than 100 countries.  While many people don't understand the concept of hunters being conservationists, the reality is that hunters spend millions of dollars worldwide for conservation projects.  John Banovich started the program in 2007 and Jan was then selected for 2008.  She did a painting of African Lions entitled "SIMBA SHADOWS" which she donated 100% to SCI.  It auctioned at their annual convention for $17,500.  All proceeds from the sale went to the SCIF Conservation Department to fund both existing and new wildlife projects in Asia, Africa and North America.  Jan then donated the rights to reproduce the painting and SCIF  did giclee prints of the image to support conservation efforts at the grassroots level. Local SCI chapters will have the opportunity to benefit from the sales of the prints by entering local conservation program data in the the SCI project database, the chapters become eligible to receive a print to auction off at their annual fundraising events.  These proceeds will then help finance the chapters' local conservation efforts.  The estimated funds raised to dates with this print exceed $40,000.

Jan has also raised money for the Africa  Wildlife Foundation. She recently had a solo exhibition in New York at the Forbes Galleries entitled: Painting Safari: Jan Martin McGuire's scenes from the African wild.  The exhibit featured 30 originals of various subjects and sizes.  The exhibit hung from March 21- May 5.  On March 27 Forbes hosted a gala benefit event.  Jan requested this event be a benefit for Africa  Wildlife Foundation.  A percentage of the proceeds of paintings that sold that evening were donated to AWF by Jan.  The amount raised that evening was $10,300.  Jan was also named Artist of the Quarter by AWF and was featured in an article in Africa Geographic Magazine for her support of AWF's work.
Jan was born in the foothills of the Rockies in Colorado. As an inveterate tomboy she spent her days climbing trees, catching snakes and drawing the animals she loved. This love of nature stayed with her when her parents moved to Oklahoma when she was twelve. Recognizing her art ability, her parents encouraged her to pursue her calling by enrolling her in art classes at the local art museum. She continued her studies by majoring in fine art at the University of Tulsa. The curriculum of totally modern/abstract art soon stifled Jan however, and she quit to follow her own path.
Since turning professional in 1982, Jan has exclusively depicted the nature and wildlife with which she holds such a bond. Known as an artist and naturalist who paints nature's diversity, she depicts African, Rainforest and North American subjects with equal expertise. Studying nature and its intricacies is a passion of Jan's. She strongly believes that to depict nature in such a way as to evoke emotion from the viewer, the artist must experience all the nuances of the out-of-doors. To touch the velvety textures of moss, to smell the pungent spruces in a marshy bog, to let the whistling wind of the tundra lift your hair from your forehead - all these things must be inside an artist to be able to come out convincingly from the end of a paint brush.
Jan travels extensively in a constant quest to satisfy the gnawing hunger inside her, which is to learn and experience nature in every way she can. From the chilly hummocks of the autumnal tundra in Alaska to the deep snowy recesses of the Montana wilderness, and on to the steamy tropical rainforest of the Peruvian Amazon and the golden savannahs of Africa, Jan sketches, paints and photographs all that nature has to offer. At home, Jan's extensive library of natural history books, field guides and videos help sustain her hunger when she is in her studio. Drawing on all these experiences in combination with the visual tools of the photos, sketches, study skins, etc. she has at her fingertips, Jan sets about creating the art that is her homage to the nature she loves.
Working in Acrylic with ChromaColour paint on smooth masonite panel, Jan creates the fine details, textures and lighting that are the hallmarks of her work. Manipulating the paint with her brushes, sponges, Saran wrap and fingers, Jan creates lifelike renditions of fur, feathers, mosses and rocks. The surrounding habitat is always scientifically correct, yet an artistic backdrop to the main subject of the wildlife she is depicting.
Jan Martin McGuire currently lives in the Osage Hills of Oklahoma. She shares her life with her husband James Gary Hines who manages the business aspect of her career. They strive to live environmentally friendly and in tune with nature by actively reducing, reusing and recycling. They share their home with Jan's teenage daughter and with a variety of animals.
