|
Amongst the environmental NGOs of southern Brazil, Mater Natura - Instituto de Estudos Ambientais (Environmental Studies Institute) is one of the oldest. Working with scientific, educational and cultural issues, Mater Natura is well known and recognized throughout the country. Their mission is "to contribute to the conservation of biological and cultural diversity to improve the quality of life of all living beings". Founded in 1983 by Biology students of the Catholic University of Paraná, Mater Natura was officially incorporated and registered as an NGO in 1987. Then in 2003, the institution was recognized by the Brazilian government as what in Brazil is called an OSCIP - "Organização da Sociedade Civil de Interesse Público" (Civil Society Organization of Public Interest). Mater Natura works for the preservation, conservation, recovery and sustainable management of Brazil's environment, natural landscapes and cultural heritage. It is an NGO with an organizational structure to manage and oversee its activities, having a multi-disciplinary team (biologists, agronomists, geologists, forest engineers, journalists, tourism specialists, etc.) that prepares and implements projects of various types. Mater Natura also does policy work, developing recommendations and participating in public policy discussions, as part of a wide network of partner organizations. |
