Elephant stuck in trough!
Wednesday, September 19, 2007

We found this baby elephant stuck, upside down in a narrow drinking trough at Caterpillar pan (waterhole). We assume it was accidentally pushed in there by adults while trying to drink but there were no elephants close by when we found it. We had been at this waterhole all morning hoping to see dogs and came back mid-afternoon, so we were surprised to find that the calf's mother had already deserted it. But perhaps it had lost its mother before it fell in the trough. Other groups of elephants came to drink and made no attempt to help it out - in fact they ignored it until it moved and then they ran away, apparently scared by it. Jealous called Peter (the PDC project manager) on the radio and he came to take a look. Then he put a towrope around its front legs, attached it to the vehicle and pulled the calf upright. It walked off and didn;t seem to be injured. I have video footage of this release which will be available from this website. It really was quite a strange sight.
