Sean Murtha

I believe strongly that any work of art has to come through deep feeling and experience. For this reason I paint and draw from life as often as possible. Often, the best I can get of a bird is a single line, a gesture or a shape. However, these usually turn into better paintings than those that make extensive use of photographs. Though I use photographs when necessary, as well as taxidermy and study skins, I rarely rely on them as a primary source. The detail a photograph can provide often becomes a distraction that can kill a painting. More important to me is the part a bird plays in its environment, its movement, the light and space around it, and the focus it can provide in a landscape.
