If you like the work of a particular artist, you may wish to consider commissioning a piece. 

Whether your commission is large or small, a painting or a sculpture, it can be very satisfying to commission a piece. Artwork can make a tremendous personal gift for special occasions. It can communicate in a way that no other object can.

Although not all artists are open to commissions, many are and this is specified in most cases on each artist's AFC Personal Web site. If they indicate they do accept commissions, feel free to contact them (or their agent) directly .

Some things to keep in mind if you do wish to commission a piece:

• Each artist has their own policy around commissions. Sometimes they may be available for commissioned work while at other times not.
   
• The more flexible your timeframe for acommission, the better. Less time pressure on the artist will generally mean better work (and ultimately a better investment).
   
• The decision by an artist to accept a commission will in most cases be guided largely by their personal interest in the proposed project. The more freedom of creativity they are given, the better.
   
• Often, the best way to communicate a commission idea, is to use examples. Identify what aspects of the artist's work you like best using examples from the artists portfolio. Consider subject matter, mood, dominant colors.
   
• Be prepared to discuss price/budget. Most artists doing commissions will. Many take significant deposits before starting work. A non-refundable fee is often required, for which you may expect a pencil sketch or colour study, depending on the type of work commissioned. On approval a 50% deposit is usually required by the artist, with the remainder payable on completion of the work.
